Club Latinitas Launches in October

Weekly After School Meetings Held Throughout Fall
Latinitas is kicking off a weekly after-school club where girls can gather to find creative ways to express themselves. In this girl-friendly place, Latinitas in middle and high school will explore visual arts, graphic design, web publishing, radio production, writing, journalism and filmmaking. Each week will offer a different hands-on workshop where girls can discover the power of media. The weekly club is held every week at the following public libraries:
  • Judge Marquez Library (610 N. Yarbrough) Every Tuesday @ 4:15pm
  • Armijo Public Library (620 E. 7th Avenue) Every Wednesday @ 4:30pm
  • Clardy Fox Branch Library (5515 Robert Alva) Every Thursday @ 3:30pm

Teen Saturday Camps - Sept. 27

Are you interested in writing for a teen magazine? Meet the editor of LatinitasMagazine.org – the first digital magazine especially for Latina girls living in the U.S. Find out how you can become a part of multimedia journalist. Girls are invited to learn how to make their own web presence at a free Latinitas Saturday Camp on September 27th from 10:00am to 12:30pm. Girls in grades 4-8th will discover the latest trends in online communication, use cutting-edge webware to create their personal web page and learn how to safely surf the information super highway. Web Divas is hosted by Latinitas, a grassroots group dedicated to empowering Latina youth. Discover how to create your own media with monthly Latinitas Saturday Camps. Attention Latina teens! Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by showing off your cultural pride. Share your thoughts on what it means to be Latina and what the term Latina power represents to you. LatinitasMagazine.org, the first digital magazine for Hispanic girls, is accepting writing contest submissions through September 30, 2008. Top winners will be awarded with an MP3 player and publication of their essay. The contest is open to Hispanic females between the ages of 14 and 24 who reside or go to school in the United States. El Paso Teens Selected as Covergirls

El Pasoans Karen Zamora and Ashley Gutierrez were selected as the Latinitas Magazine Covergirls. LatinitasMagazine.org is the first digital magazine for U.S. Latina youth. The national magazine hosted a contest searching for covergirls who represented real Latinita inner beauty. Two El Paso natives were selected as the winners. They will receive a free makeover consultation, hair cut, hair style and make up session by Detailz Beauty Salon along with a photo shoot with local photographer Cecilia Monarrez. Their photos will be featured on Latinitas Magazine.

Latinitas Cover Model Search - Deadline Aug. 5

LatinitasMagazine.org, the bilingual webzine by and for Latina youth, is now accepting submissions for its Covergirl Makeover Contest. The contest deadline is August 5, 2008. The contest will focus on Latina teens ages 14-18 currently residing in the El Paso, Texas region. Selected winners will be given a makeover by hairstylists and makeup artists from Detailz Beauty Salon. Photos of selected covergirls will be showcased on LatinitasMagazine.org. Covergirls will be selected on how they represent real Latinita inner beauty. Girls who are interested must write two essays answering what Latina power means to them and what makes them beautiful on the inside (150-300 words per essay). Applicants must get parent approval to participate. Contest entries should be submitted along with a head shot, full name, phone number, email address and age to latinitasawards@yahoo.com. The deadline for submissions is August 5th. Winning submissions will be announced and published on www.latinitasmagazine.org. Latinitas is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering Latina youth through media and technology.

Latinitas Dos Mundos Photo Workshops - August 2nd

Girls get ready to create your lasting impression. Dos Mundos is a bi-national photography project focused on telling the story of border life in the El Paso/ Juarez region. As part of this project, Latinitas is hosting a series of photography workshops to teach girls how to take the perfect picture applying tips from the pros on lighting, composition and exposure. Use digital cameras, manipulate your images and tell a story with your photos. Photographers will be asked to look at the world around them and make a statement about where they live through pictures. The collected photos will become part of a charity exhibit “Dos Mundos” which will work it's way around various venues around the area to galleries in City Hall and Chamizal. Join us during one of these workshops:

August 2nd from 1-2pm for girls in grades 4-8th and 2-4pm for girls in grades 9-12th at the Armijo Public Library (620 E. 7th Ave.).

August 9th from 12:30-2pm for girls in grades 4-8th and 2-4pm for girls in grades 9-12th at the Judge Marquez Library (610 N. Yarbrough).

August 10th from 11-12pm for girls in grades 9-12th and 1-3pm for girls in grades 4-8th at the Main Public Library (501 N. Oregon).

Teen Reporter Internship Program

Come be a reporter for us!
Latinitas Magazine's signature outreach program for Latina teens in El Paso, Texas is its Teen Reporter Intern Program, a journalism mentorship program where Latina high-school students are mentored and guided by experienced journalists. Currently, Latinitas Teen Reporter Intern Program is held throughout Central Texas and in the El Paso region. Teens gather for informal editorial meetings around the city and participate together in cultural, art and music events. We have current openings for high school students who are interested in becoming teen reporters for our magazine. Latinitas' Teen Reporter Intern Program continues past the school year into the summer and meetings usually take place in the evenings.
