TEEN LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE - January 29

Young women interested in developing their leadership skills are invited to apply for the Teen Leadership Institute. The institute will consist of a leadership conference and monthly workshops on leadership methods, decision making skills, goal setting, social justice, public speaking, self-expression, interpersonal communication, civic engagement and volunteering. This leadership program is aimed at encouraging and motivating Latina teen girls to make a difference in their community through leadership, self-expression and volunteerism. Young women will engage in interactive activities that will help them explore their own strengths and cultivate their leadership abilities. The program will run throughout the school semester.

ELIGIBILITY:
•Be a Hispanic girl in 9-12 grade
•Demonstrate an interest in volunteerism

REQUIREMENTS:
•Organize 2 community service projects
•Complete a minimum of 20 volunteer hours during the semester

To promote girl power, Latinitas is organizing the Chica Power Fest for middle school girls. This event is geared toward encouraging girls to build confidence, discover their voice, express themselves and make wise decisions. The event will feature informative and inspirational workshops, guest speakers, panelists, and multimedia presentations led by local female leaders on topics such as body image, confidence, peer pressure, media literacy, leadership, healthy relationships, cultural identity and bullying. Girls will discuss the challenges facing girls today and explore positive ways to deal with stress through hands-on creative expression activities revolving around poetry, acting, photography, art and song. Our Teen Reporter Program is a group of high school Latinas trained in the fundamentals of journalistic writing and multi-media production. They have done some outstanding things – some things their adult counterparts in media have yet to achieve - including having a national byline in Latinitas’ magazines, interviews with Latino elite such as best-selling author Sandra Cisneros, international music stars Los Lonely boys and playwright and filmmaker Luis Valdez.  We are recruiting members who would like to participate in lessons in writing, photography, video and radio, field trips and coverage of local events. As part of the EPCC Author's Fiesta, three published Latina authors - Christine Granados, Claudia Guadalupe Martinez, and Beatriz Terrazas - will make a special presentation just for members of Latinitas.  These three Chicana/Latina writers will share helpful advice about getting published, guide creative writing exercises that will generate ideas for future writing projects and participate in a reading performance.  Space is limited, so rsvp is required. CLUB LATINITAS LAUNCH - September 13

Latinitas is kicking off a series of free weekly after-school girl empowerment clubs where girls in grades 4-8th can gather to build confidence and express themselves creatively through media, art, culture and technology. In this girl-friendly place, Latinitas will explore visual arts, writing, photography, folk arts, acting, crafts, audio production, journalism and film making. Each week will offer a different hands-on workshop where pre-teens can discover the power of self-expression as they foster a positive self-esteem. NOMINATIONS FOR LATINA TOP ALL-STARS

To spotlight outstanding Hispanic female athletes who are out there changing statistics, Latinitas Magazine, the first digital magazine made for and by young Latinas, is launching a nationwide search for girls who exemplify superior athletic achievement, high academic standards, community involvement and outstanding leadership qualities.  The magazine is accepting nominations through its website of a Latina teen, age 13–19, who participates in school-sponsored athletics or open amateur sports and exhibits a dedication to leadership, community service and academic excellence for its 2010 Latinitas Sports All-Star Award.  Winners will be featured in a front page article in Latinitas teen publication: TeenLatinitas.com. Latinitas is organizing a covergirl makeover contest. High school girls from the greater El Paso region are invited to submit an essay describing why they are proud of their Latina culture for a chance to win a free professional hairstyle, make-up consultation, and photo shoot. The top winners will be featured in Latinitas Magazine, the first digital magazine by and for Latina youth. Essays should be 450-750 words in length.   Essays should focus on how your family came to the U.S. or how you maintain your cultural roots.  The deadline for submissions is August 16th. Latinitas in the Community: June 2010

Latinitas has been out in the community making a difference.  Here are highlights of our events over the last month.  


Teen Leadership Institute:
June 26, 10-12:30pm at Latinitas Headquarters (1359 Lomaland)
Latinitas hosts monthly leadership workshops for teens on leadership methods, effective communication, decision making skills, goal setting, public speaking, civic engagement and volunteering. This leadership program is aimed at encouraging and motivating Latina teen girls to explore their own strengths, cultivate their leadership abilities, discover their voice and make a difference in their community through leadership and volunteerism.

Stay Teen Day
El Paso has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the state of Texas. To counteract this trend, Latinitas joined the El Paso Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition, and we partnered with the Teen Advisory Board at the University Medical Center to develop a series of youth-produced public service announcements on teen pregnancy prevention. Latinitas also served as a planning team member for the Stay Teen event held on May 28th at EPCC which brought together 200 local middle school students to raise awareness of the issue of teen pregnancy and to encourage youth to enjoy their teen years and prolong parenthood. This free event featured testimonials from teen parents about the challenges of being a young parent as well as an exhibit of information tables, a screening of Latinitas-produced videos and a carnival of fun teen-friendly activities where kids celebrated being young.

La Posada Home
Latinitas is partnering with La Posada Home, a shelter which helps homeless women and their children who have suffered abuse or abandonment, to offer monthly creative expression workshops for pre-teen girls living in the shelter.

Aliviane Partnership
Latinitas is proud to welcome Aliviane's Prides Center as its newest Affiliate Club Partner. Latinitas Affiliate Clubs are volunteer-led clubs made up of girls who participate in our creative expression activities. Latinitas volunteer Eva Alarcon has taken on the leadership role as the Club Leader and will be leading weekly workshops for middle school girls in the Chamizal neighborhood at Aliviane's Prides Recreation Center. Aliviane is a nonprofit that provides mental health and substance abuse and prevention services.



Club Latinitas Field Day
To celebrate the end of the school year, Latinitas hosted a Field Day for girls enrolled in several of our after-school programs on Saturday, June 5th at Armijo Park from 1-4pm. This end of the year celebration brought girls together for an afternoon of swimming, games and summer activities. During the 2009-2010 school year, Latinitas hosted after-school programs at Horizon Middle School, Armijo Recreation Center, Judge Marquez, Clardy Fox, Memorial, Ysleta, Richard Burges and Main Public Libraries. In our clubs, girls were guided by college mentors in learning how to create self-expression projects. Latinitas weekly after-school clubs provided a fun, safe and girl-only place where Latinitas build confidence, self-esteem, cultural pride, while learning to make healthy decisions and become leaders. This school year, girls in our clubs created projects such as making a collage explaining how beautiful they are, creating a friendship bracelet, designing a retablo on teen issues, creating a leyenda, writing a corrido, making a quilt, sharing survival tips for teens, discussing the consequences of being a teen mom, making a radio talk show, creating a parody of America’s next top model, organizing a Global Youth Service Project which served the El Paso community, creating a mother’s day craft and filming a telenovela.

Teen Media Academy - Registration Open

Calling all aspiring female journalists and media producers. Latinitas is hosting a week-long summer camp for high school girls with intensive instruction from media producers. The camp features field trips to local media stations as well as hands-on workshops led by professional media producers.  During the camp, you will complete an article, photo essay, blog, audio podcast and a video broadcast.  The camp will also feature field trips to KFox, Power 102 and UTEP as well presentations by professional TV reporters, radio journalists, photographers and much more. Latinitas is Hiring - Summer Youth Jobs

Latinitas is partnering with Workforce Solutions for the Summer Youth Program.  As part of this initiative, Latinitas will provide on-the-job training for youth ages 16-24 during the summer.  Latinitas will provide paid internships for Latina high school and college students with training on becoming multimedia producers.  Interns will work with professional and college mentors to learn about magazine feature writing, blogging, creating podcasts, taking photographs and making videos.  Interns must meet eligibility guidelines established by Workforce Solutions including income requirements.  For more information, contact Latinitas at 239.5051 or latinitaselpaso@yahoo.com

Stay Teen Day - May 28

Latinitas is a part of the hosting committee for the upcoming Stay Teen Day.  The event is geared toward raising awareness of the issue of teen pregnancy and encouraging youth to stay teen and postpone parenthood.  During Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month in May, this full-day conference is aimed at uniting and educating teens for a positive change.  This free event will feature testimonials from teen parents about the challenges of being a young parent as well as an exhibit of information tables and a carnival of fun teen-friendly activities where kids can celebrate being young.  Stay Teen Day will take place Friday, May 28th from 9:00am to 3:00pm at the EPCC Administrative Building (9050 Viscount).

The event is organized by the Stay Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition of El Paso Members: Child Crisis Center of El Paso, Communities in Schools, Department of Public Health, ESC Region XIX, Health & Human services Commission, Latinitas, March of Dimes, Project VIDA Health Center, School Age Parent Center, The Medical Institute, and the University Medical Center of El Paso.   The event is sponsored by the Superior Health Plan and the El Paso First Health Plan.

Mother's Day Writing Contest - May 3 Deadline

TeenLatinitas.com, the first digital magazine by and for Latina youth, is now accepting submissions for the annual Día de las Madres/ Mother's Day essay contest. The deadline for submissions is May 3, 2010. The contest is open to Hispanic girls ages 13-18 residing in the Greater El Paso region. The contest will be judged by local Latina professional media makers. Essays should be between 250 to 500 words in length and describe why your mother or motherly figure is special. Winning submissions will be announced and published on www.TeenLatinitas.com. In addition, the top winner will receive a complimentary mother and daughter photo shoot and photograph as well as a prize basket for their mom. Latinitas in the Community

Family Fun Fair: April 11 at YMCA - Loya BranchLatinitas participated in the Family Fun Fair hosted by the Coalition for the Prevention of Child Abuse. This event themed “Empowering Families, Protecting Children” was aimed at preventing abuse and neglect by engaging at-risk families in fun, family-focused activities and providing information on community resources to help strengthen the family bond and eliminate stress. As part of this event, Latinitas volunteers hosted craft activities where kids created a quilt focused on promoting healthy families.

Father Yermo Career Day: April 16
Latinitas introduced young teens to careers in the multimedia field as part of the Father Yermo Career Day. Latinitas hosted an information table to inspire the next generation of media makers. Thanks to Latinitas intern Miriam Campos, girls learned about careers in magazines, films, photography and broadcast journalism.

Youth Leadership Summit: April 17 at Canutillo High School
Latinitas joined forces with community youth development groups to encourage local middle and high schoolers to make healthy decisions by participating in the Youth Leadership Summit. Youth participated in workshops on leadership, effective conflict resolution, self-esteem building and problem-solving strategies.

Dia de los Ninos: April 24 at Washington Park
Latinitas joined the Dia de los Ninos Annual Festival to promote literacy among local youth. The El Paso Public Library and the Parks and Recreation Department began the tradition of holding this annual festival to celebrate the youth of El Paso, Texas. The festival is focused on promoting the importance of literacy and education in a family-friendly event where people of all cultural, social, and economic backgrounds can gather. As part of the festivities, Latinitas volunteers hosted a bookmark making art projects for children.

Latinitas joined the international movement - Global Youth Service Day. This is the largest service event in the world and mobilizes millions of children and youth who improve their communities through service-learning. On GYSD, Latinitas members helped address the world’s most critical issues through youth-led community service projects.

Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition
El Paso has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the state of Texas. To counteract this trend, Latinitas has joined the El Paso Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition, and we are partnering with the Teen Advisory Board at the University Medical Center to develop a series of youth-produced public service announcements on pregnancy prevention. We are also a planning team member for the upcoming Stay Teen event in May to encourage youth to enjoy their teen years and wait to become parents.

Girl Talk Series
Latinitas is offering a new series of FREE girl empowerment workshops in partnership with local schools, libraries, recreation centers, Girl Scout troops, churches and youth groups. These workshops focus on helping girls build confidence through creative expression with themes such as self-esteem, body image, leadership, goal setting, diversity, cultural pride, substance abuse prevention, bullying and wellness. These workshops are generously sponsored by the El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department. Model Search: Latinitas Photo Shoot - April 24

Latinitas will be hosting a photo shoot for our upcoming magazine issue at Latin Rhythm Studio. We are recruiting girls ages 13 and over who are willing to volunteer as models and be part of this exciting event. Our magazine team is working on our next print issue of Teen Latinitas magazine with a focus on promoting wellness and fitness. Our models will participate in a Zumba workshop and pose for photographs. All you need to do is bring your workout clothes, water bottle, towel, tennis shoes, your dancing moves and energy. Throughout the Spring semester, Latinitas has been leading the Amigas in Action Project, an initiative that engages members of our after-school programs in researching community needs, organizing volunteer projects to address these issues and creating media projects about their service learning experience as part of a public awareness campaign. Each Club Latinitas has directed a service project based on an issue they choose as well as an advocacy project to showcase their service learning experience. Hispanic girls in our clubs have also learned how to create multi-media projects through writing, photography, desktop publishing, graphic art, web design, film-making and audio production. Their multi-media public service announcements are aimed at helping raise community awareness of the issues they selected. Their written, photo, art, film, online or audio projects that will be distributed online, at schools and to the media.

Peer Mentors Wanted

Start Your Own Club

Latinitas is launching a new series of affiliate clubs throughout El Paso and the surrounding region in partnership with local volunteers, community centers, schools and nonprofits. You can start a club in your neighborhood. Each club must have at least one female adult sponsor and 5 members. Clubs meet at various community sites at least once per month. Clubs are intended for girls in grades 4-8th. Latinitas provides a club leader training, club leader manual, supply starter kit, activity outlines and access to a lending library of equipment. Latinitas Magazine is seeking female high-school students, ages 14 to 18, interested in journalism to contribute to www.TeenLatinitas.com, the first digital magazine by and for Latina teens. Latinitas will host an orientation for junior reporters on February 13th. Latinitas is dedicated to creating greater Latina representation in the media by training the next generation of Latina media makers. Through our teen reporter program, young journalists are published in our webzine. Latinitas college editorial interns and professional journalists mentor and guide Latina high-school journalists in developing story ideas, conducting interviews, researching stories, writing articles, and editing content. Furthermore, junior reporters act as an editorial advisory group helping to advise Latinitas staff in making editorial decisions on the content for each issue and the direction of the magazine. This is a great opportunity for aspiring journalists to be published in a growing magazine and have their voice heard!
