CLUB LATINITAS LAUNCH - September 13

Latinitas is kicking off a series of free weekly after-school girl empowerment clubs where girls in grades 4-8th can gather to build confidence and express themselves creatively through media, art, culture and technology. In this girl-friendly place, Latinitas will explore visual arts, writing, photography, folk arts, acting, crafts, audio production, journalism and film making. Each week will offer a different hands-on workshop where pre-teens can discover the power of self-expression as they foster a positive self-esteem. The clubs are held after school every week starting the week of September 13th at the following community centers:
Horizon Middle School - Every Tuesday
Clardy Fox Public Library - Every Tuesday
Judge Marquez Public Library- Every Thursday
La Fe Culture & Technology Center - Every Thursday
Memorial Park Public Library- Every Thursday

PEER MENTORS WANTED

Would you like to mentor younger girls? We are currently recruiting high school female volunteers to serve as mentors in our girl empowerment clubs. You can serve as a positive role model to encourage, motive and educate middle school girls. Our clubs are held at various community sites after school and on Saturdays. NOMINATIONS FOR LATINA TOP ALL-STARS

To spotlight outstanding Hispanic female athletes who are out there changing statistics, Latinitas Magazine, the first digital magazine made for and by young Latinas, is launching a nationwide search for girls who exemplify superior athletic achievement, high academic standards, community involvement and outstanding leadership qualities.  The magazine is accepting nominations through its website of a Latina teen, age 13–19, who participates in school-sponsored athletics or open amateur sports and exhibits a dedication to leadership, community service and academic excellence for its 2010 Latinitas Sports All-Star Award.  Winners will be featured in a front page article in Latinitas teen publication: TeenLatinitas.com. Nominees are judged FOREMOST on athletic accomplishment. Extra-curricular activities, community service and scholarship will also be considered. MULTIMEDIA INTERNS - APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED

We are seeking talented Latina high school and college students to serve as Writing & Multimedia Interns. Interns must commit at least 5-20 hours per week for 4 months (80 hour minimum). This position will work closely with our multimedia team to gain experience in the entire magazine process and develop a portfolio with published articles, photos, blogs, audio pieces and videos. Teen girls interested in writing for a youth-oriented magazine are invited to join TeenLatinitas.com, the first digital magazine by and for Latina teens. This award-winning on-line magazine is currently accepting applications for writers and editors who would like to join our magazine team. This is a great opportunity for aspiring journalists to be published in a growing magazine and have their voice heard! Our group meets monthly the second Saturday of each month from 3-4pm. Girls in grades 4-8 are invited to get in touch with their creative side and explore ways to express themselves in the Latinitas Saturday Camp. Our monthly workshops feature multimedia enrichment activities focused on arts & crafts, writing, photography, poetry, audio and video. The Latinitas Saturday Camp series is hosted the 2nd Saturday of every month from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at the Judge Marquez Public Library (610 N. Yarbrough). BACK TO SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST - Aug. 16


Call for Submissions – Deadline August 16
Latinitas is organizing a covergirl makeover contest. High school girls from the greater El Paso region are invited to submit an essay describing why they are proud of their Latina culture for a chance to win a free professional hairstyle, make-up consultation, and photo shoot. The top winners will be featured in Latinitas Magazine, the first digital magazine by and for Latina youth. Essays should be 450-750 words in length.   Essays should focus on how your family came to the U.S. or how you maintain your cultural roots.  The deadline for submissions is August 16th.
