Young women interested in developing their leadership skills are invited to apply for the Latinitas Teen Leadership Institute. The institute will consist of biweekly workshops on leadership methods, communication skills, decision making, goal setting, public speaking, civic engagement and volunteering. This leadership program is aimed at encouraging and motivating teenage girls to make a difference in their community through leadership, civic engagement, communications, social justice, advocacy and volunteerism. Young women will also engage in several interactive and entertaining activities that will help them identify and cultivate their own leadership abilities. The program will run throughout the fall leading up to a graduation ceremony in the December. Space is limited. The deadline to submit completed applications is September 19th. The membership fee is $20 and covers supply costs. Scholarships are available. Applications can be submitted via the web at

To promote girl power, the Latinitas Teen Leadership Institute members are organizing a Latina Power conference for local middle and high school girls. This event encourages girls to build confidence, discover their voice, express themselves and make wise decisions. The event will feature informative and inspirational workshops, guest speakers, panelists, and multimedia presentations led by local female leaders on topics such as body image, confidence, peer pressure, media literacy, leadership, healthy relationships, cultural identity and bullying. Girls will discuss the challenges facing girls today and explore positive ways to deal with stress through hands-on creative expression activities revolving around poetry, acting, photography, art and song. Girls will also enjoy dance performances. The event is open to girls ages 11-18. Admission is $5 and covers lunch. Space is limited, so pre-registration is required. THROUGH HER EYES PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT

Latinitas will partner with the La Fe Cultural & Technology Center to celebrate the creative talents of local girls in a special "Through Her Eyes" photography exhibit. The exhibit showcases the photography of El Paso residents ages 10 to 18 from Latinitas after-school clubs, a local youth program that uses creative multimedia education to empower Latina youth. The photos present a vibrant, expressive and fascinating portrait of the border community as depicted by youth photographers. The exhibit will be featured in the Community Gallery throughout April. Young women interested in developing their leadership skills are invited to apply for the Teen Leadership Institute. The institute will consist of a leadership conference and monthly workshops on leadership methods, decision making skills, goal setting, social justice, public speaking, civic engagement and volunteering. This leadership program is aimed at encouraging and motivating Latina teen girls to make a difference in their community through leadership and volunteerism. Young women will engage in interactive activities that will help them explore their own strengths and cultivate their leadership abilities. Latinitas has been out in the community making a difference. Here are highlights of our events over the last month.

Teen Leadership Institute:

Latinitas hosts monthly leadership workshops for teens on leadership methods, effective communication, decision making skills, goal setting, public speaking, civic engagement and volunteering. This leadership program is aimed at encouraging and motivating Latina teen girls to explore their own strengths, cultivate their leadership abilities, discover their voice and make a difference in their community through leadership and volunteerism.

Stay Teen Day

El Paso has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the state of Texas. To counteract this trend, Latinitas joined the El Paso Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition, and we partnered with the Teen Advisory Board at the University Medical Center to develop a series of youth-produced public service announcements on teen pregnancy prevention. Latinitas also served as a planning team member for the Stay Teen event held on May 28^th at EPCC which brought together 200 local middle school students to raise awareness of the issue of teen pregnancy and to encourage youth to enjoy their teen years and prolong parenthood. This free event featured testimonials from teen parents about the challenges of being a young parent as well as an exhibit of information tables, a screening of Latinitas-produced videos and a carnival of fun teen-friendly activities where kids celebrated being young.

La Posada Home

Latinitas is partnering with La Posada Home, a shelter which helps homeless women and their children who have suffered abuse or abandonment, to offer monthly creative expression workshops for pre-teen girls living in the shelter.

Aliviane Partnership

Latinitas is proud to welcome Aliviane's Prides Center as its newest Affiliate Club Partner. Latinitas Affiliate Clubs are volunteer-led clubs made up of girls who participate in our creative expression activities. Latinitas volunteer Eva Alarcon has taken on the leadership role as the Club Leader and will be leading weekly workshops for middle school girls in the Chamizal neighborhood at Aliviane's Prides Recreation Center. Aliviane is a nonprofit that provides mental health and substance abuse and prevention services.

Club Latinitas Field Day

To celebrate the end of the school year, Latinitas hosted a Field Day for girls enrolled in several of our after-school programs on Saturday, June 5^th at Armijo Park from 1-4pm. This end of the year celebration brought girls together for an afternoon of swimming, games and summer activities. During the 2009-2010 school year, Latinitas hosted after-school programs at Horizon Middle School, Armijo Recreation Center, Judge Marquez, Clardy Fox, Memorial, Ysleta, Richard Burges and Main Public Libraries. In our clubs, girls were guided by college mentors in learning how to create self-expression projects. Latinitas weekly after-school clubs provided a fun, safe and girl-only place where Latinitas build confidence, self-esteem, cultural pride, while learning to make healthy decisions and become leaders. This school year, girls in our clubs created projects such as making a collage explaining how beautiful they are, creating a friendship bracelet, designing a retablo on teen issues, creating a leyenda, writing a corrido, making a quilt, sharing survival tips for teens, discussing the consequences of being a teen mom, making a radio talk show, creating a parody of America’s next top model, organizing a Global Youth Service Project which served the El Paso community, creating a mother’s day craft and filming a telenovela.

Family Fun Fair: April 11 at YMCA - Loya BranchLatinitas participated in the Family Fun Fair hosted by the Coalition for the Prevention of Child Abuse. This event themed “Empowering Families, Protecting Children” was aimed at preventing abuse and neglect by engaging at-risk families in fun, family-focused activities and providing information on community resources to help strengthen the family bond and eliminate stress. As part of this event, Latinitas volunteers hosted craft activities where kids created a quilt focused on promoting healthy families.

Father Yermo Career Day: April 16
Latinitas introduced young teens to careers in the multimedia field as part of the Father Yermo Career Day. Latinitas hosted an information table to inspire the next generation of media makers. Thanks to Latinitas intern Miriam Campos, girls learned about careers in magazines, films, photography and broadcast journalism.

Youth Leadership Summit: April 17 at Canutillo High School
Latinitas joined forces with community youth development groups to encourage local middle and high schoolers to make healthy decisions by participating in the Youth Leadership Summit. Youth participated in workshops on leadership, effective conflict resolution, self-esteem building and problem-solving strategies.

Dia de los Ninos: April 24 at Washington Park
Latinitas joined the Dia de los Ninos Annual Festival to promote literacy among local youth. The El Paso Public Library and the Parks and Recreation Department began the tradition of holding this annual festival to celebrate the youth of El Paso, Texas. The festival is focused on promoting the importance of literacy and education in a family-friendly event where people of all cultural, social, and economic backgrounds can gather. As part of the festivities, Latinitas volunteers hosted a bookmark making art projects for children.

Latinitas has joined the international movement - Global Youth Service Day. This is the largest service event in the world and mobilizes millions of children and youth who improve their communities through service-learning. On GYSD, Latinitas members will help address the world’s most critical issues through youth-led community service projects.

Throughout the Spring semester, Latinitas has been leading the Amigas in Action Project, an initiative that engages members of our after-school programs in researching community needs, organizing volunteer projects to address these issues and creating media projects about their service learning experience as part of a public awareness campaign. Each Club Latinitas has directed a service project based on an issue they choose as well as an advocacy project to showcase their service learning experience. Hispanic girls in our clubs have also learned how to create multi-media projects through writing, photography, desktop publishing, graphic art, web design, film-making and audio production. Their multi-media public service announcements are aimed at helping raise community awareness of the issues they selected. Their written, photo, art, film, online or audio projects that will be distributed online, at schools and to the media.

Latinitas Magazine is seeking female high-school students, ages 14 to 18, interested in journalism to contribute to the teen version of www.LatinitasMagazine.org. Latinitas will host an orientation for junior reporters on May 23rd at 1:30 to 3:30pm at Armijo Public Library located at 620 E. 7th Avenue. Latinitas is dedicated to creating greater Latina representation in the media by training the next generation of Latina media makers. Through our junior reporter program, young journalists are published in our webzine. Latinitas college editorial interns and professional journalists mentor and guide Latina high-school journalists in developing story ideas, conducting interviews, researching stories, writing articles, and editing content. Furthermore, junior reporters act as an editorial advisory group helping to advise Latinitas staff in making editorial decisions on the content for each issue and the direction of the magazine. This is a great opportunity for aspiring journalists to be published in a growing magazine and have their voice heard! We are looking for fresh ideas on all content related to Latina youth culture appropriate for high-school students. Latinitas is currently accepting applications from female high-school students who seek hands-on journalism experience. Discover the latest trends in online communication and use cutting-edge software to create your own blog.This is a mother/ daughter class geared towards girls in grades 4 through 8. The Latinitas Saturday Camp is hosted the 4th Saturday of every month from 10:30am to 12:30pm at La Fe Cultural and Technology Center 721 South Ochoa (rear building). Latinitas Media Career & College Conference 6/11

The Latinitas Media Career & College Conference will be hosted at UTEP on Thursday, June 11th with the goal of inspiring the next generation of media professionals. Latinitas, a nonprofit focused on empowering girls through media, is collaborating with UTEP to train local high school girls interested in careers in the media industry. This collaborative event will offer teens an opportunity to participate in hands-on media enrichment workshops to imagine themselves as future newspaper reporters, web editors, news anchors, radio DJs or photojournalists. Participants will tour the UTEP campus, meet with media professionals, hear from college students majoring in communication and listen to a panel of college professors. Professional media producers will train girls how to use their own experiences and digital technology to create media. Girls in grades 9th through 12th are invited to participate in this event. Girl Empowerment Festival

A coalition of local groups will host the 2nd Annual El Paso Girl Empowerment Festival on May 7th. This is a full-day conference aimed at empowering local middle school girls through hands-on workshops, an agency fair, interactive presentations, and creative self expression activities. Girls will develop their confidence, self-esteem and body image while building resiliency to substance abuse, teen pregnancy, peer pressure, bullying, teen dating violence and other important youth issues. We are expecting approximately 200 local middle school girls.
